One of the oldest and most cited rhodiola studies looked specifically at acute stress. Foreign students taking a low-dose SHR-5 extract over 20 days during a stressful exam period showed significant improvements in physical fitness, mental fatigue, and neuromotor test performance compared with placebo2Spasov, A. Rhodiola Rosea Benefits for Mental Fatigue and Focus

The classic use case for roseroot is mental exhaustion after night shifts or stretches of heavy cognitive load. Worth being upfront about: the evidence on concentration specifically is not unanimous. A placebo-controlled trial in nursing students on shift work found no statistically significant benefit over 42 days on vitality and fatigue scores4Punja, S., Shamseer, L., Olson, K. & Vohra, S. (2014). Rhodiola rosea for mental and physical fatigue in nursing students: a randomized controlled trial. PLOS ONE, 9(9), e108416. That does not make rhodiola ineffective, but it does suggest individual response varies, and it is exciting territory for more consistent future trials to settle.

Rhodiola Rosea Benefits for Anxiety and Mood

Beyond fighting fatigue directly, roseroot has been linked to a steadier sense of wellbeing under sustained pressure. In a 14-day trial in mildly anxious students, the group taking 200mg of rhodiola rosea extract twice daily showed a clear reduction in self-reported anxiety, stress, anger, and confusion, along with an improvement in overall mood, compared with an untreated control group6Cropley, M., Banks, A. To be fully transparent, this trial was not placebo-controlled but compared against an untreated group, and this particular study found no difference in cognitive test performance. The mood findings were still clear, though, and align with earlier observations about rhodiola’s effect on the HPA axis.

Rhodiola Rosea Benefits for Burnout and Chronic Fatigue

For people dealing with long-term exhaustion or burnout symptoms, some initial clinical data now exists. In an open, multicentre trial with 118 people experiencing burnout symptoms, 400mg of rhodiola extract daily over 12 weeks brought noticeable relief from stress and fatigue symptoms, with good tolerability7Kasper, S. & Dienel, A. Important context: both of these were open trials with no placebo control group, so they offer encouraging but not yet conclusive evidence. Larger placebo-controlled trials specifically on burnout are still needed.

Rhodiola Rosea Benefits for Exercise Performance and Recovery

For athletes, endurance is where the interest concentrates. A 2025 meta-analysis of 26 randomised trials with 668 healthy participants found that rhodiola rosea supplementation improved VO2 max, time to exhaustion, time-trial performance, and antioxidant capacity, while lowering creatine kinase and lactate levels9Wang, X., Yang, X., Gao, Z., Zeng, J. & Liu, Y. (2025). The effect of Rhodiola rosea supplementation on endurance performance and related biomarkers: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Frontiers in Nutrition, 12, 1645346. Origin and Extraction

Rhodiola rosea, also known as roseroot, golden root, or Arctic root, grows wild across the cold, high-altitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere: Scandinavia, Siberia, the Russian Far East, and the Alps and Carpathians. It favours poor, rocky soil and survives frost, short growing seasons, and intense UV exposure, conditions that likely shaped its own protective compounds. The name roseroot comes from a distinctive trait: freshly cut, the root gives off a faint rose scent.

The root, or rhizome, is the part used, traditionally applied in Russian and Scandinavian folk medicine for fatigue, altitude adaptation, and cold exposure, including by Siberian hunters and Vikings. Since wild populations could not come close to meeting today’s supplement demand, most of the rhodiola rosea material used commercially now comes from cultivated sources, including in Eastern Europe and Canada.

The best-studied active compounds are rosavins and salidroside. For clinical research, the root is usually processed into a standardised extract, most often set to a ratio of 3% rosavins to 1% salidroside, the ratio found naturally in the root itself.

Rhodiola Rosea Side Effects

Across most clinical trials, rhodiola rosea was well tolerated, with side effect rates barely different from placebo. Mild effects that occasionally come up include dry mouth, dizziness, and, particularly with late-day dosing, a mildly stimulating effect that can show up as restlessness or trouble falling asleep. A review on stress management and rhodiola rosea summarises that no serious side effects attributable to the extract were reported across clinical trials, and that, per the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) HMPC monograph process, no known drug interactions have been documented to date10Anghelescu, I. There is still not enough safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it is best avoided during that time. Because rhodiola can act on similar neurotransmitter pathways to some antidepressants, it is still sensible to talk to a doctor before combining it with antidepressants or other medication that affects serotonin or noradrenaline, even though no documented interactions currently exist. There is no EU-approved health claim for rhodiola rosea; the effects described here come from individual studies and should not be read as medical advice.

Rhodiola Rosea Dosage

Clinical research most commonly uses 200 to 600mg of a standardised extract (3% rosavins, 1% salidroside) per day, often split across one or two doses. For acute, short-term demands, like before an exam or a competition, single doses from around 100mg have also been studied, while chronic everyday stress or burnout symptoms tend to call for daily use over several weeks.

It is best taken in the morning or early afternoon, since the mild stimulating effect can disrupt sleep later in the day.

How Quickly Does Rhodiola Rosea Take Effect?

Onset depends heavily on the use case. For acute stress, studies have observed effects after a single dose. In open trials on prolonged fatigue, some people noticed early improvement within a week. For noticeable changes in chronic fatigue or mood, most people need two to four weeks of consistent daily use before the full effect sets in.

Capsules, Drops, or Tea: Which Form Works Best?

Capsules with a standardised extract are the best-researched and easiest form to dose accurately, since the rosavin and salidroside content stays consistent. Rhodiola drops (tinctures) offer more dosing flexibility but vary more from product to product in active compound content. Roseroot tea made from the dried root is traditional, but it delivers noticeably lower and less consistent amounts of rosavins and salidroside than a standardised extract, so it works better as a complement than a main source.

Buying Rhodiola Rosea: What to Look For

The most important quality marker is standardisation. Look for an extract explicitly standardised to rosavins and salidroside, ideally at the natural 3% to 1% ratio, rather than just a raw plant-material weight in milligrams.

A known issue in the market is substitution or dilution with the cheaper, far less studied Rhodiola crenulata. Because salidroside testing is simpler and cheaper than rosavin analysis, some suppliers only verify salidroside, which does not reliably rule out crenulata being mixed in. Reputable suppliers use genuine Rhodiola rosea root, have rosavin content independently tested, and make certificates of analysis available.

The same scrutiny applies when buying rhodiola drops or roseroot tea: look for traceable root origin and, where possible, a stated active compound content, rather than a label that just says “Rhodiola rosea root” with no further detail.
